Las BomPleneras

Representing Puerto Rico and Humboldt Park, Chicago, Las Bompleneras is the longest-standing all-women’s Bomba and Plena ensemble in the Puerto Rican diaspora. Widely recognized for their dynamic harmonies and explosive drumming, Las Bompleneras represent a new generation of Bomba and Plena practitioners firmly rooted in folkloric tradition, while bringing a fresh contemporary edge to their sound.  Their work goes beyond performance,  it is an act of cultural affirmation, storytelling, and resistance, connecting ancestral traditions to present-day struggles, celebrations, and healing.

In celebration of their 15th anniversary, Las Bompleneras released their first original singles, “Caminando,” composed by Ivelisse Díaz, and “Si Te Hablo,” composed by Anissa Vega, marking a new chapter for the group and cementing their musical legacy. They also launched the Encuentro Entre Mujeres education and performance series, offering workshops, panel discussions and concerts featuring all-women-based Afro Carribean music ensembles.

Founded in 2010 by Ivelisse Diaz and Jessica Rodriguez, and currently under the direction of Diaz and Anissa Vega, Las Bompleneras continues their commitment to creating spaces that center and empower women. As one of a handful of all-women ensembles in existence, Las Bompleneras continue to honor and preserve the oldest genres of Afro-Puerto Rican music, while shaping the future of Bomba and Plena in the diaspora and beyond.
